March 16, 2010 - Cigarettes and other forms of tobacco are addicting. Nicotine is the drug that causes addiction.

Nicotine is one of the most potent substances known to man. As a poison it is second only to the cyanides in its destructive effect on the human body. Nicotine has been widely used as an insecticide. Fortunately, most of the nicotine is destroyed when the tobacco is burned. For chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco, snus and snuff and dissolvables, which are held in the mouth between the lip and gum, or taken in the nose, the amount released into the body tends to be much greater than smoked tobacco.
