Quit Smoking Diet: Veggies, Milk..

April 5, 2007 - Quit Smoking Diet: Veggies, Milk; Getting ready to quit smoking? Try eating more vegetables and less meat -- and swap that coffee for a glass of milk. A Duke University study, when asking 209 smokers (averaged a pack of cigarettes a day for an average of 21 years), showed that fruits, vegetables, and dairy foods make cigarettes taste terrible in 45%. But meat, coffee, and alcoholic beverages make smoking much tastier in 70%, finds Duke University psychologist F. Joseph McClernon, PhD, and colleagues. Menthol-cigarette smokers were very likely to say that their cigarettes tasted the same no matter what kind of foods and beverages they consumed. Nearly 90% of the black study participants smoked menthol cigarettes. The paper appeared in the April 2007 issue of the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research. (WedMD - Health News, Daniel J. DeNoon)

Shame on Virginia..

April 5, 2007 - Shame on Virginia - the Virginia General Assembly rejected Gov. Tim Kaine's proposal for a statewide smoking ban. The house voted 59-40 against the ban, which would have made Virginia the 22nd state with such laws. Under Kaine's bill, proposed as an amendment to legislation sponsored by House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith, smoking would have been prohibited in all Virginia restaurants unless the restaurant posted a sign reading "Smoking Permitted." "I am disappointed that lawmakers chose not to adopt my common-sense efforts to restrict smoking in restaurants," Kaine said in a statement. "The scientific evidence about the bad health effects of secondhand smoke is not in dispute, and my amendment would have protected the health of restaurant employees and patrons." Wisconsin voters overwhelmingly (2-to-1) favor upping cigarette taxes by $1.25 a pack.

April 1, 2007 - Wisconsin voters overwhelmingly (2-to-1) favor upping cigarette taxes by $1.25 a pack. Raising the price of tobacco — all by itself — will keep nearly 85,000 children alive today from ever taking up the habit, sparing 27,000 from early death. It will be the tipping point for another 40,000 adults who will quit because they can't afford it, sparing 11,000 premature deaths and 11,000 smoking-impaired births. Gov. Doyle and key Republican and Democratic lawmakers are heeding the public's demand for action. The $1.25-a-pack cigarette tax increase they're promoting will dramatically improve the health and well-being of countless Wisconsin families for decades to come.
