Laws passed by the state government last year, which come into effect on September 22nd, have tightened restrictions in WA. Bans include: tobacco product displays in retail premises (with exemption for specialist tobacco retailers); smoking in outdoor eating areas (with some exemptions; smoking in cars with children under 17 years present; smoking near children's playground equipment; smoking between the flags at the beach; forcing staff to work in designated smoking areas.

Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers Lambeau field - fans adjusting to no tobacco law..
Wisconsin's statewide smoking ban means no more lighting up in the stadium concourse, and that caused some problems during the home opener.
But the statewide smoking ban applies to Lambeau Field not only because it is a sports arena, but also a workplace. Some smokers say they'll just have to adjust.
“It's no different then getting on an airplane,” said Beth Abrahamson of Superior, Michigan. Abrahamson said she smokes a cigarette about every hour. No smoking for the three hour game could be challenging, so would she risk sneaking a smoke inside? “No, no, no! I saw somebody do that the last game we were at and somebody caught them, so it's not a good thing to do. I don't want to get kicked out of the game,” said Abrahamson. But not every smoker took the new rule so well. And a couple hours into the game the smoking ban was heating up some fans.
At halftime, Green Bay Police had to stop crowds of smokers who wanted to have a cigarette inside the concourse. The only place smokers can go now is outside. And once you go outside, you can't come back.
Police say they didn't force any smokers to leave Sunday’s game, although they did give several warnings. The no smoking policy also applies to smokeless and electronic cigarettes. While smokers were given warnings at this game, violators can face fines of up to $250.

New Brunswick, Canada - New Democratic Party tobacco-control strategy..
September 20, 2010- The 57th New Brunswick general election will be held on September 27, 2010. The election will return members to the Legislative Assembly in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. (New Brunswick general election, 2010)
New Democratic MLAs (members of the legislative assembly) will champion the creation of a comprehensive tobacco control strategy for New Brunswick, NDP (New Democratic Party) leader Roger Duguay said Sunday, September 19th.
Duguay: "Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in New Brunswick, so reducing smoking is critical to the sustainability of our health care system. New Brunswick is behind most other provinces in terms of taking the steps needed to reduce smoking among children and adults, but NDP MLAs will work to make sure we jump to the head of the pack."
According to health groups like the Canadian Cancer Society, he said, raising cigarette taxes is one of the most effective ways for a province to reduce its smoking rate.
Duguay said New Brunswick has the second lowest cigarette tax rate in Canada — about 10 cents per cigarette lower than the other Maritime provinces.
The NDP tobacco control plan proposes to raise cigarette taxes by 2.5 cents per year over four years, he said, bringing the tax into line with Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island by the fourth year. Duguay said this would will raise about $55 million in revenue for the province, and eventually reduce tobacco consumption by about 10 percent.
Other tobacco control strategies the NDP will champion include:
* Legislating plain packaging of tobacco products, as recommended by international tobacco control guidelines to reduce tobacco industry marketing to kids;
* Tobacco retail reform to better enforce the law against selling tobacco to kids;
* A contraband prevention strategy, along the lines recommended by the Canadian Cancer Society and other health groups, to reduce the availability of illegal contraband tobacco;
* Expanding the Smoke-Free Places Act to include outdoor locations where people gather, particularly places where children gather like parks and playgrounds (As of June 30, 2004, smoking was prohibited in all workplaces, including restaurants, bars, bingo and bowling facilities, and casinos, Smoke-free Places Act);
* When the deficit is eliminated and resources allow, expanding smoking cessation services.

Bulgaria - politician wants to lower tax on cigarettes to reduce contraband..
A new nationalist political party has been set up in Bulgaria after the VMRO party split in two over internal dissent. The new party is called “VMRO-NIE”, a Bulgarian acronym for “Faith, Moral, Patriotism, Responsibility – National Ideal for Unity”. The Deputy Mayor of Plovdiv, Petko Atanasov, has become the chair of the new party on Sunday, after the party got its court registration earlier in the week, the BGNES news agency reported. Over 100 cigarette brands, currently on the country's market, are without paid excise while 70 of them have murky origin and unknown manufacturers, according to Atanasov, who pointed out this is very dangerous for smokers – lab tests have revealed that four brands have elevated levels of nicotine and cellulose, making them toxic and even deadly.
Atansov said the way to solve the staggering problem with cigarette contraband is to lower the excise tax levels to the ones from last year, which will make Bulgarian cigarettes more competitive and will limit the exodus of people from traditional tobacco growing regions in the country.

South Korea - Smoking Manner Campaign - promoting cigarette butt-free streets..
The Seoul-based tobacco maker said Friday that it will distribute a total of 20,000 portable ashtrays free of charge from Sept. 17 through Sept. 19 at SK gas stations in Seoul and the surrounding Gyeonggi Province. JTI Korea, famous for such products as Mild Seven and Salem, has conducted the campaign since 2001.
JTI Korea General Manager Ali Yagiz: "As the Seoul Metropolitan Government initiated a special crackdown on those who throw away cigarette butts out the window after smoking inside their cars by charging fines starting Sept. 1, we hope many smokers will take part in our campaign."
