New Zealand - Māori Affairs Committee Report released - November 2010..

November 4, 2010 - The Maori Affairs Select Committee's final report on tobacco is a landmark in smokefree initiatives, according to the Public Health Association (PHA).

The Select Committee's report on its inquiry into the tobacco industry and the consequences of tobacco use for Maori was released today, November 3rd. Its recommendations underscore a strategy to halve smoking rates by 2015, as the first step towards a smokefree New Zealand by 2025.

The Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand, they are Polynesian and comprise about 14 percent of the country's population.

Maori women have the highest smoking prevalence (49.3 percent) followed by Maori men (41.5 percent). Young Maori were more likely to smoke and second-hand smoke exposure was higher among Maori than non-Maori.

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira announced back on September 23, 2009 the Maori Affairs parliamentary select committee would hold an inquiry into the impact of tobacco use on Maori. The result of the committees work is the report with recommendations to reduce the burden of tobacco related disease. a href="http://snus-news.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-zealand.html">New Zealand - Maori committee to investigate smoking..)
